For film fanatics, we share the four fantastic film spots in the Wild West of Ireland. Full of memorable places from movies & TV, whether you’re an action fan or someone in need of a fantastical escape, there’s something here for everyone.

You might want to take off your 3-D glasses for this one – here are a few film hotspots up close and personal along the way in the Wild West of Ireland.

Game of Thrones

This is a staple for those who love a good high fantasy epic. Danger, suspense, and a bit of magic. If you’ve a hankering to visit the Iron Islands [not to be confused with the Aran Islands], the best way to do so is to take the Causeway Coast Adventure Tour. It takes you up close and personal to the beautiful ruins of Dunluce Castle. A huge inspiration to the seafaring family the Greyjoys. You can imagine yourself about to set sail; onward to battle – or simply to escape to a world of literary enchantment…

The Secret of Roan Inish

A staple family film for anyone who loves Ireland, folklore tales of selkies come to life with a heartwarming tale of a sister in search of her long-lost little brother. Located in rustic and breathtaking Donegal, the wildness of the seal-folk and the warmth of welcome coexist along the Wild Atlantic Way. Tossing waves and majestic coves greet the eye – and if one were to stand and listen to the wind and look across the sea to distant islands, one might hear the singing of the seals. To see where the selkies might frolic, your best bet is either our exclusive signature tour, The Heart of Ireland’s Wild West, or possibly our spirited Wild West Atlantic Way Tour.

Harry Potter

It’s difficult to pick but one iconic film for perhaps one of Ireland’s most famous features; the Cliffs of Moher – but perhaps those who really love the magic and mystical world of Harry Potter might recognize the backdrop for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. If unable to apparate to the same spot Harry and Dumbledore did, we can always take you there ourselves – especially if you choose the Wild Atlantic Coast Adventure for your Wild West Irish Tour. You get to see every enchanting angle of the Cliffs with us; weather permitting – from sailing by on a ship that isn’t unlike the maneuvering of a magical broom to coming up to the top of the Cliffs by means of our comfy mini-bus. You’ll be bespelled by the sight; no matter the view – as each is dazzling in its own right.

Father Ted

It’d be a crime not to mention one of WWIT’s owner Michael Waugh’s own favorite, Father Ted. “Craggy Island” is fictional in this satirical Irish sitcom. You can find its origin in the Aran Islands [told you we’d get there eventually], especially Inis Oírr, which provides the aerial shot of the island itself. County Clare, however, is home to the Parochial House where the three priests coexisted somewhat-peacefully together. A beautiful stone home set near the Burren National Park. It’s a striking sight – one that lingers in Irish memory with fondness and cheek. To see it in person, your best bet is probably the Wild Atlantic Coast Adventure.
